UNDERWEAR programs/utilities have been created by a translator,
who has learned over the years, that computers are not
restricted to the use of a word processor. My first computer was
a CP/M floppy machine. It had 64 Kb RAM, just enough to run
WordStar v3.0, and I operated it solely through the WS menu. It
took me quit a while until I found out, that the black hole,
from where I started WS, could be used as a command line.
When writing this I have 2 harddisks and 20 mega RAM under DOS
v6.22 and 4DOS v5.52, and I feel uncomfortable within many menu
driven ·user friendly· programs.
What a relief to regain the freedom of the command line !
So it goes...
Since I developed most UNDERWEAR programs in the first place for
my own use, they reflect a great deal the way how I operate my
system.
Meaning, that I like to automate my routines as far as possible
and run them unattended whenever possible. Lots can be achieved
with DOS batch files, miracles can be worked using the numerous
functions, variables, aliases and built-in commands of 4DOS for
batch processing.
Meaning, that I prefer small component utilities for creating
individual à la card batches over massive menu driven programs.
However, highly customizable menu driven programs, which allow
to run external programs, are welcome, if they provide command
line options for batch processing. Or, even better, if they give
out errorlevels upon termination.
Meaning, that WINDOZE as a main working platform is for me still
out of the question. Sure, I have it installed (v3.1) and like
its graphic interface, alright, but I'm simply not willing to
sacrifice the freedom of the command line: largely automated
4DOS batch routines, command line processing and filename
completion and much more. At the end it boils down to the
question: Who is running whom?
There are few meaningful things, which can be accomplished only
under WINDOZE. I use it only as an extension for 4DOS: for
importing and printing ASCII texts and accessing Internet.
Most basic computing is faster and can be done with less efforts
under 4DOS right on the command line.
Besides - using different video modes, color palettes and screen
fonts you can achieve quasi ·graphic· displays in text mode,
too.
However, since most UNDERWEAR programs are designed to run from
within applications, they should also work from a DOS shell
under WINDOZE. Just make sure, that you run them in DOS text
mode (hit Alt-Enter), due to their built-in screen fonts and
color palettes they may generate odd characters when executed
in graphic mode. This goes specially for accompanying UNDIZ.COM.
It works nice, when properly installed with the Program Manager.
Meaning, that UNDERWEAR is above all freeware for active (4)DOS
users. Who like to create procedures, which no menu programmer
(and least of all MICROSOFT) can possibly foresee. Most
accompanying UNDERWEAR demo utilities are intentionally written
as batch files to allow the user to modify them to her/his own
needs and likings.
You found moths=bugs in UNDERWEAR programs? Well, UNDERWEAR
seems to be pretty nutritious for these creatures. I patch the
holes as soon I as noticed one, but I'm also aware, that some
features, tailored for my special needs and system, may fail
under other operational conditions (such as older DOS versions
than 5.0, UNIX, networks, notebooks). I'm now also aware, that
UNDERWEAR descriptions, composed partially of upper ASCII chars,
are almost unreadable on UNIX systems. Sorry about that, but my
descriptions stick to the WISIWYG rules: ·What I See Is What You
Get·. Run accompanying UNDIZ.COM to see what I mean. Besides,
most UNDERWEAR archives contain a 3LINES.DIZ in plain lower
ASCII.
Requirements
°°°°°°°°°°°°
Not much: VGA card, DOS v5.0+ and a 386+ machine. Most programs
will also work under older DOS versions. 4DOS is desired, but
not required.
Error conditions
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
The most common error message when running UNDERWEAR programs
under (4)DOS is the ·Out of environment space· sermon. In this
case increase the amount of the ·Shell= /E:xxxx· value in your
CONFIG.SYS or in the Environment=xxxx statement in 4DOS.INI.
Another error condition may occur when renaming UNDERWEAR
executables to something else. Most of them are aware of their
original names and will notify you, when renamed. If you get
messages such like: ·Error: xxxx is renamed ¡· or ·Can't find
xxxx ¡· simply rename it back to its original name.
UNDERWEAR distribution
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
I've encountered several heavily altered "UNDERWEAR" archives
with an accordingly modified separate PACKING.LST. To prevent
manipulations of the packing list and to give the user an
opportunity to compare the list with the contents of the
original archive, I have included into UNDERWEAR executables an
option ·PL· [=Packing List to file] for verifying the archives
contents. If the archive contains more files than listed in the
Packing List do me and yourself a favour and delete these
superfluous from the archive if you intend to upload it.
However, UNDERWEAR rhymes with FREEWARE and you may freely
bundle and distribute single UNDERWEAR utilities along with
other programs as long as you sign the archive and its
documentation with your own name. The only thing I insist upon,
is that you do NOT declare it as an UNDERWEAR archive.
UNDERWEAR programs are ·Take it or leave it·WARE and not
supported in any way. (I'm not all that crazy about the idea
to make answering to E-mail a full time job).

Most of the last 20 UNDERWEAR programs listed in UNDIZ.COM are
available from anomymous FTP servers. Below their sites:

General (4)DOS considerations & tips
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
Treasure your old DOS programs written in assembly (mostly
.COMs). ·Old· has become increasingly a synonym for smaller and
often better utilities. They load incredibly fast and take up
only a tenth or less in size of nowadays mega .EXEs. They
include often sources and are functionally to a great extent
identical with ·new· programs but have less (if at all)
restrictions and nag screens.
One of those outstanding oldies is B. Simon's and R. Wilson's
key stuffer STACKEY (archive STCKEY4H). It lets you ·borrow·
wanted features of menu driven programs for batch processing. It
tricks out any menu program and beats 4DOS' KEYSTACK utility.
For text file comparisons try Mike Albert's uncrippled FC.EXE
(archive FC30). If you happen to have an older INSIGHT.UW than
this, you could for example rename it to something else and run
FC.EXE upon both INSIGHT files to find out the (small)
differences between the old and this file.
A superb archive lister is ARCVIEW by Nazarenko S.V. (archive
ARCV71). Its features remind of AVIEW, but it is much smaller in
size and faster, too. ARCVIEW is highly customizable: try it in
conjunction with UNDERWEAR's binary file viewer AB.COM (archive
AB11.COM) and text file lister (U-LIES10.COM).
For managing about 20 000 files in 400 directories on 6 drives I
need a fast and reliable file finder. Ray van Tassle's WIZ.EXE
(archive WIZ36) is THE answer. Besides that WIZ is really fast,
it offers an effective duplicate finder and batchable options
for SEARCH & EXECUTE routines. Uncrippled shareware at it's
best!
UNDERWEAR programs deal a lot with VGA screen fonts (UMFONTs
supporting umlauts äåöü ÄÅÖÜ and ß) and color palettes, which
allow to turn the screen into a semi-graphic display. There is
no way to capture an UMFONTed & palette colorized screen to a
file in text mode, but it can be saved into a graphic format
like a GIF or PCX. The easiest way to accomplish this, is using
the ·must have· shareware program ·Screen Thief· ST.EXE.
Red Alert: Beginning with version ST158, ST.EXE prints it's logo
upon every captured picture. Don't delete your old version or
get version ST157 or older for logo free screen thieving ¡
